The first test which you will need to tackle is the theory test. This is split into two sections; a MULTIPLE CHOICE ELEMENT and a
HAZARD PERCEPTION TEST
(HPT). You must achieve a "pass" mark in both elements during the same test. ie. it is not permissible to pass one part and then redo the other part later on. Both must be passed during the same test. |

THE THEORY TEST - PART 1 |
MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS |
The first part is a multiple choice section. This consists of 50 questions, chosen at random from a bank of over 1000, all on matters relating the The Highway Code and general driving law. There will be 4 possible answers on each question. Most questions require one answer, however
some will require you to mark two answers. You must achieve 43
correct answers or more within 57
minutes. You can go back to any question during the allowed time. All of the test is conducted in a private booth, in silence and on a "
TOUCH SCREEN" computer. A facilitator will assist you if necessary until you are ready to commence the test.As you can see, it is important not to
underestimate the test. You should undertake as much study as is required until you are fully prepared. All the questions and answers are published by the DSA and are available in both book form and on CD-ROM.

THE THEORY TEST - PART 2 |
HAZARD PERCEPTION |
The second part is a Hazard Perception Test (HPT). It is designed to test your visual awareness skills and also your speed of reaction to hazards and
changing circumstances on the road. You will be presented with a series of 14
video clips, each lasting one minute, showing hazards involving road conditions, road
users and pedestrians. There will be many potential hazards for you to identify, however, there will be one hazard in each clip which develops into a danger. The faster you recognize the hazard, the more points you will
score, 5 being the highest. One of the 14 clips will contain 2
scoring elements, so watch out for this. There will be a "mouse" on the computer which you will "click" in order to spot the hazard. You must score at least 44 out of 75 in order to pass this element of the test. |

The Theory Test can be taken as soon as you have your Provisional Licence. There is no harm in taking the test before you start driving, however, it is
usually better to undertake both the practical and theory at the same time. This way you can enhance your knowledge whilst on the road and also study things that you can put into practice straight away in your driving.
There is no limit to the number of attempts you may make although it is wise to prepare well and only take the test when you are ready. |
